Aboriginal medical & Professional Health sciences prep

The Aboriginal Medical and Professional Health Sciences Preparation Program is offered in partnership with McMaster University.  The program is delivered at Six Nations Polytechnic, approximately 30 minutes from McMaster University. The course delivery is based on the problem based method of learning and will include Life-Mapping and self reflection, groups sessions, self directed learning, campus visits to McMaster University, simulated patient interviews in various formats and discussions with health professionals and traditional medicine people.

Program Description

The Aboriginal Medical and Professional Health Science Program has but one goal: to increase the number of successful Aboriginal applicants to medical school and other professional health science programs in Canada. The program is comprised of two three unit undergraduate courses in Indigenous Studies-McMaster University and is delivered at Six Nations Polytechnic.
The program is designed to help you effectively evaluate your skills as a potential health professional and develop the competencies that will improve your success in gaining admission.  Additionally, the program will assist you to strengthen your understanding of contemporary and traditional indigenous culture and develop community mindedness that will in turn foster your competency to work with Aboriginal peoples and communities once completed your studies.

Courses of Study

Indigenous Medicine 1—Philosophy (3H03)
This course will examine the Aboriginal concepts of health and wellness. The wholistic approach will be used in the classroom as well as in visits by Elders, medicine people, and class trips to places of health and wellness, and healing. This course will engage the learner in activities designed to assess 'self' in terms of skills, knowledge and attitudes regarding health, healing, wellness, problem solving, Aboriginal identity and society in general. The student will be challenged to examine and re-examine self so that he/she will be able to present in written form the best picture of who they are and what they have to offer those in health professions and Aboriginal people.

Contemporary Indigenous Societies (3CC3)
An intensive examination of selected political, economic or social problems faced by selected Indigenous People. The course will deepen appreciation of self-development, self-confidence and further develop skills in public presentations of self, beliefs, goals and social understanding of health and health as it relates to the Aboriginal Culture and issues. The student will engage in oral presentations, oral critiques of self and classmates, and various simulated interview scenarios. The life mapping that began in the first course will be concluded.

*All students must complete both courses 3H03 and 3CC3 to achieve the "Aboriginal Medical and Professional Health Science Preparation Program" certificate.

Admission Requirements

All applicants will be assessed on an individual basis.

As a potential health professional these courses are designed to develop competencies that will improve your success in gaining admission. Additionally, the program will assist you to strengthen your understanding of contemporary and traditional Indigenous culture and community mindedness that will in turn foster your competency to work with Aboriginal Peoples and communities once you’ve completed your studies.

  1. Pick up an Admissions Application Package at Six Nations Polytechnic, 2160 Fourth Line, Ohsweken

  2. Submit completed package along with:

    • all high school, college and university transcripts
    • $30 processing fee; and
    • Copy of photo identification
    • Letter of Permission if you wish these credits to be applied to your current studies
