Aboriginal teacher education program

The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program offered in partnership with Queen's University.

The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) of Queen's University Faculty of Education offers several unique program tracks, which provide an opportunity for candidates to specialize in Aboriginal education.

Community-based courses are adapted to local contexts and needs, and include Aboriginal perspectives, balancing Aboriginal-specific and student-centered learning with knowledge of the teaching/learning process and research on Aboriginal education.  Campus and community-based  components include a course specifically on Aboriginal Teach Education, and Practicum Placements in First Nations schools.

Upon completion of the program, candidates will receive a Diploma in Education or a Bachelor of Education degree; candidates will also received the Certificate of Qualification as a teacher, allowing them to teach in First Nations and Provincial schools.

Program Features--The community-based program reflects features offered at the Faculty of Education with the addition of Aboriginal-specific content.  Program material is delivered through short, intensive course sessions schedules so that those who have to work or have family responsibilities are able to attend without being away from home from extended periods.

Please note:  While this is a part-time program, practicum placements consist of twelve weeks.  This requirement must normally be completed in three blocks of four weeks each, over the two-year period.
