ogwehoweh language diploma Year 1

The Ogwehoweh Language Diploma Program is offered in partnership with McMaster University's Indigenous Studies Program and is accredited by the Centre for Continuing Education.  Upon completion of this program, students can continue into the Degree program and complete an undergraduate degree in the language.  See details of the Ogwehoweh Language degree program.

The Ogwehoweh Language Diploma Program  seeks to further:

This program basically serves four groups of students:

Advanced Standing

Upon completion of the Diploma, students wishing to continue their studies may transfer their credits to an undergraduate degree program in the language OR may receive credit for up to 24 units of academic work towards their undergraduate degree program at McMaster University.

Admission Requirements

Students wishing to enter the Ogwehoweh Language Diploma must have at least one of the following

 NOTE:  Some applicants may be required to attend an academic language pre-session.  These admission requirements are consistent wit h those of diploma programs offered by the Centre for Continuing Education.

*A Mature Student, as defined in the Undergraduate Calendar of McMaster University, has not attended secondary school or college on a full-time basis for at least two years; and has not previously attended university.

To Apply

  1. Pick up an admissions application package at: Six Nations Polytechnic, 2160 Fourth Line, Ohsweken, Ontario.

  2. Submit completed admissions package along with:

    • all high school, college and university transcripts;
    • $69 processing fee; and,
    • copy of photo identification.
  3. Application deadline for full time studies: August 15 (applications must be received at SNP by or on this date).

  4. Note:  Grand River Post Secondary Education Office deadline for fall programs is May 17.

Academic Language Pre-Session

All applicants to the Language diploma or degree program must have an introduction to the language before they can be admitted to the program.

This program will be offered on a part time basis during the winter and spring session of 2013.  See continuing education for more details.

 

Program of Study

Note:  The Ogwehoweh Language Diploma can be taken in either the Mohawk or Cayuga language.
All courses are six hours per week – two 3-hour classes per week.

Introductory Language
This course provides immersion exposure for the beginner language learner.  Focus is on speaking activities geared toward practical usage.  Emphasis is placed on conversational exchange for maximum benefit.  Presentations are a required element of this course.

Language in Motion
This course provides the fundamentals of basic grammar concepts in Ogwehoweh languages.  This course is geared toward engaging the student in meaningful dialogue with a speaker to facilitate furthering language learning in this conversational and functional course.

Introduction to Orthography
Students will study the orthographic system that has been developed for these Ogwehoweh languages.  Basic transcribing principles will also be studied in this course.

Intermediate Grammar
This course will expand language comprehension and use of orthography and grammar practices.  It involves a final project to develop materials for the local immersion elementary schools.  The student will develop a learning project that includes one aspect of culture and tradition.

Year 2
Conversational Language
This course further advances the language learners in conversing with a fluent speaker.  In addition, storytelling will be utilized by both learner and speaker for reinforcement of cultural skills and vocabulary development.

Intensive Language
Students will be required to apply and implement the principles studied in this course with the addition of independent research assignments of the intermediate level.  These may include reciting a number of oral stories and the thanksgiving address.

Applied Orthography
This course will be a continuation of study from Introduction to Orthography.  Students will engage in transcribing and translation activities in conjunction with their own areas of interest as well as working with a proficient speaker.  Their work will include applied research for their final project.

Culture and Tradition
This course a continuation of the principles involved in Language in Motion.  This course is delivered in the Ogwehoweh language.  A curriculum development project for language instruction is a requirement for successful completion of this course.
