Practical Nursing with Aboriginal Communities Program

Mohawk College Linda Bomberry Lynda Bomberry, Graduate

This expanded diploma program reflects the increased scope of practice of the Registered Practical Nurse to meet the new standards of practice as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Students will take their classes at Six Nations Polytechnic and the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences (campus located on the grounds of McMaster University) under the guidance of qualified nursing teachers in the health care agencies. Students will be eligible to apply for Mohawk College scholarships and bursaries.

Upon successful completion of the Practical Nursing Program, graduates are eligible to write the registration examinations conducted by the College of Nurses of Ontario and, if entry to practice regulations are met, can practise as a Registered Practical Nurse. The Regulated Health Professions Act, Nursing Act 1991, outlines that, to be eligible to register, candidates must not have been found guilty of a criminal offence under the Narcotic Control Act or Food and Drugs Act. Also, they must not suffer from a physical or mental condition/disorder that makes it desirable in the public interest that they not practise. Any of the above may be grounds for denial of registration and therefore denial of the right to practice. Six Nations Polytechnic and Mohawk College do not require or wish to have knowledge of this information. Contact the College of Nurses of Ontario directly at 1-800-387-5526 if you have any question related to the Regulated Health Professions Act.

The Practical Nursing with Aboriginal Communities Program is another accomplishment due the efforts of community members and the 2020 Vision Strategy.
