Preparation for Medical School & Health Sciences Program

The Pre-medical program is comprised of two three-unit courses designed to assist aboriginal students to effectively evaluate their skills, knowledge and attitudes as potential medical professionals and develop the competencies that will improve their success in gaining admission to medical school.

2020 VISION: Strategy for Educating Aboriginal Physicians in Ontario

Introduction

This strategy is based on three basic principles:

  • Equitable representation of Aboriginal people in the medical profession through accelerated and supportive admission to medical school.
  • Affecting the current medical school curriculum and standards of practice through the incorporation of an Aboriginal worldview and indigenous knowledge.
  • Demonstration of the principle of reciprocity on the part of Aboriginal students through service in and around Aboriginal communities upon graduation.

July 7 - August 8, 2008

Part I - Course title: Indigenous Health Science I - Philosophy Course Description - This course will examine the Aboriginal concepts of health and wellness. A holistic traditional approach will be used in the classroom as well as visits by Elders, medicine people and class trips to health, wellness and healing.

Part II - Course title: Contemporary Indigenous Societies: Selected Topics Course description - An intense examination of selected political, economic or social problems faced by selected Indigenous people.

Admission Requirements:

  • Completed 2 years of a 3 year undergraduate degree OR
  • Completed 3 years of a 4 year undergraduate degree OR
  • Completed their undergraduate degree with a 3.0 grade point average
  • Other applicants will be considered on an individual basis
  • In no way should applicants consider that they gain automatic or direct admission to medical school or health sciences upon completion of this program. Rather they will have completed two three-unit courses that may be applied to their undergraduate studies and they will have developed the competencies to negotiate the medical school application process with an increased chance for success.
