The Pre-medical program is comprised of two three-unit courses designed to assist aboriginal students to effectively evaluate their skills, knowledge and attitudes as potential medical professionals and develop the competencies that will improve their success in gaining admission to medical school.
This strategy is based on three basic principles:
Part I - Course title: Indigenous Health Science I - Philosophy Course Description - This course will examine the Aboriginal concepts of health and wellness. A holistic traditional approach will be used in the classroom as well as visits by Elders, medicine people and class trips to health, wellness and healing.
Part II - Course title: Contemporary Indigenous Societies: Selected Topics Course description - An intense examination of selected political, economic or social problems faced by selected Indigenous people.
Admission Requirements:
In no way should applicants consider that they gain automatic or direct admission to medical school or health sciences upon completion of this program. Rather they will have completed two three-unit courses that may be applied to their undergraduate studies and they will have developed the competencies to negotiate the medical school application process with an increased chance for success.
