Program Description

The Gayogo̲hǫ́nǫˀ Gawęnǫdahgǫh (Cayuga Language) Immersion Program is a two-year (non-accredited) immersion language program, taught at the Six Nations campus.

This is not an introductory language program. Incoming learners must be able to converse in the program language to some degree.  Learners will require a high degree of commitment to study in this program on a full-time basis.

Through intensively learning the root word method and Cayuga grammatical concepts, students will quickly master vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and listening skills required to become an advanced level speaker.The goal of this program is to have students confidently use the language in a variety of settings. Learners will be able to create their own words and convey meaning in the language and most importantly, think in the language. They will also develop skills needed to become employable within the Hodinǫ̱hso:ni’ language community as language resource developers, educators, translators, etc.

Program Highlights

  • 2760 contact hours; 2 years
  • 46 weeks / per year, Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm
  • Intensive immersion learning environment following the root word method
  • Cohort model; new intake not offered every year
  • Reach an advanced Cayuga-level speaking proficiency!

  • CAYU 1001: Intermediate Language 1 (10-units)
  • CAYU 1002: Intermediate Language 2 (10-units)
  • CAYU 1003: Intermediate Language 3 (10-units)
  • CAYU 1004: Intermediate Language 4 (10-units)
  • CAYU 1005: Intermediate Language 5 (10-units)
  • CAYU 1006: Intermediate Language 6 (10-units)
  • CAPS 1001: Capstone 1 (9-units)

69-units of Level 2 Core Requirements:

  • CAYU 2001: Advanced Language 1 (10-units)
  • CAYU 2002: Advanced Language 2 (10-units)
  • CAYU 2003: Advanced Language 3 (10-units)
  • CAYU 2004: Advanced Language 4 (10-units)
  • CAYU 2005: Advanced Language 5 (10-units)
  • CAYU 2006: Advanced Language 6 (10-units)
  • CAPS 2001: Capstone 2 (9-units)

Admission Requirements
  • Learners will be admitted on the basis of an OSSD or equivalent and successful completion of a pre-admission written and oral assessment in both English and the program language.
  • Students who do not meet the admission requirement may be considered for admission as a Mature Student. Contact the Admissions Officer for more details.
  • To maintain a status of ‘Good Standing’ and to complete this program, students must meet the following requirements:
    • a passing grade in each of the core courses 
    • satisfaction of all academic requirements of the program

Note: Six Nations Polytechnic will be sponsoring Gayogo̲hǫ́nǫˀ Gawęnǫdahgǫh (Cayuga Language) Immersion student’s tuition for the 2023-24 academic year.
