Knowledge Systems, Storytelling, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing

Guest Speaker: Samantha Doxtator

Join us for an evening with Samantha Doxtator as she shares engaging and thought-provoking discussions exploring Hodinohsó:ni astronomy, cosmology and the deep relationships between the stars, seasonal cycles, land, and ways of knowing. Her presentations weave together traditional teachings, oral history, celestial knowledge, and contemporary understandings of Indigenous science, inviting participants to think about the night sky not simply as astronomy, but as a living system connected to identity, responsibility, language, and worldview.

Through storytelling, visual teachings, and interactive discussion, Samantha shares teachings about constellations, sky beings, cycles of time, agricultural knowledge, and the ways celestial observation guided Hodinohsó:ni peoples in ceremony, governance, navigation, and daily life. Her work emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with Indigenous knowledge systems and understanding astronomy through relational and cultural frameworks rooted in community and ancestral teachings.

Samantha’s presentations create space for reflection, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of how the stars continue to guide Indigenous knowledge systems today.
